The SuperTank is a 27,000 mAh portable power bank that is designed to charge all of your devices at once. In this article, we are going to debunk if this new crowdfunding project a good one or not.
There are four USB ports: 2 USB-A ports, and 2 USB-C ports. So, it can charge phones, some tablets, MacBooks, and more. The device is capable of fully charging in an hour, and can then charge your phone for an entire week, using one charge. It sounds like a fantastic technological innovation.
But, there are several drawbacks and flaws that you should know about before you decide whether or not to back it.
Review and Discussion – Why shouldn’t i back this project?
The first thing you need to know is the difference between the SuperTank and the SuperPort. The SuperTank is, quite simply, just a power bank that stores electricity. But, It doesn’t come with any way to plug it into the wall and charge it. Their solution to this problem was to come out with the SuperPort, an AC charger for the SuperTank. The exclusion of an AC power cord is becoming more of a common occurrence when purchasing devices, but it still ticks people off when they find out they have to pay extra just to use the device.
It’s also pretty easy to forget that you need the SuperPort, as well, so that’s something to remember when potentially backing this product.
If you’re like most savvy backers, you check through the comments on the campaign before you make your decision. In this particular case, a glance at the comments is going to leave you very confused about the “SuperCord”.
Early in the campaign, the SuperCord was only 60w. Then, they introduced the 100w SuperCord, which backers could purchase separately. This made backers question whether the 60w cord was obsolete before the campaign was even over. The short answer is no, it isn’t obsolete, but it isn’t anything special, either.
Most any USB cord is 60w. However, in order to charge the SuperTank at 100w, you have to use a 100w cord and power supply. This is likely why they designed the 100w cord to begin with, but it’s still questionable as to why they were charging for it. This upset backers so much that, as a stretch goal, they decided to include a 100w cord with every SuperTank.
So, although it’s confusing, you’ll likely be getting a 100w cord, not the 60w cord, and you won’t have to pay extra for it now.
If your device charges wirelessly, unless it has a wired option as well, you can’t charge it with the SuperTank. It isn’t capable of doing wireless charging. The company states that it will cause overheating issues. They also state that to incorporate this technology and fix the overheating issue, they would have to scrap and redesign the whole thing. They aren’t willing to do this, and lots of backers say they aren’t willing to wait for it, if they did.
But, many backers have requested wireless charging, so maybe an option that includes wireless charging will be an option on future campaigns.
As far as USB port options go…
you’re sort of stuck with the mixture of both USB-A and USB-C ports. As of now, there is no all USB-C SuperTank option. However, many backers have requested it, and it may be something that we see on another campaign in the future.
While the campaign boasts that the SuperTank can charge all of your devices, this isn’t so. While you can charge a Macbook with a USB cord, this won’t work for other laptops. Not every device can be charged via USB cord. So, if you don’t own a Macbook laptop, the SuperTank likely won’t charge your device.
The longevity of this product is a bit questionable.
The SuperTank doesn’t come with any sort of protective case. The company says that it’s strong enough that it doesn’t need a case, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt, either. If you’re going to get one, it’s probably a good idea to pledge enough to get the plastic case, as well. It will also only last after being charged and recharged 500 times. It’s going to depend on how long the thing actually stays charged, not just how long they claim it stays charged, how far that 500 charges will get you.
The SuperTank now comes in an attractive blue option, and the SuperPort comes in black and silver. So, since the SuperPort doesn’t come in blue, it won’t be an exact match to the blue SuperTank. The cords don’t come in blue, either. It seems really odd to offer the blue color option for one part, but not the other.
Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that the use of the word “portable” makes it seem like the SuperTank is lightweight. It is, to a degree.
It’s 250 grams, which is almost 9 ounces. That’s as much as carrying around a glass of water with you everywhere. When you think of it like that, it’s not as lightweight as one would imagine.
So, is the SuperTank worth backing? Possibly. If it stays charged for as long as the company claims it does, it could be massively useful to some people. If you have lots of devices that are charged with a USB cord, it could also be a good option for you. If you have more than 2 devices that use USB-C, a laptop that doesn’t charge with a USB cord, lots of devices that charge wirelessly, or only own one mobile device, this probably isn’t the product for you.
Also, no matter what you decide, you’re probably going to want to remember to pledge to receive the SuperPort, as well, so that you can charge the SuperTank with an AC cord.
